WEST CHESTER, PA — The Rustin High School Band earned a place on the national stage this March as one of only five high school bands selected nationwide to perform at the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival in Chicago. The event, held at the iconic Chicago Symphony Hall, celebrates excellence in wind band performance and gave students an unforgettable opportunity to showcase their talents alongside elite peers.
Beyond their performance, the band participated in an exclusive clinic led by Retired Colonel Jason Fettig, former director of the President’s Own United States Marine Band and current director of bands at the University of Michigan. This session provided a rare chance for students to learn from an esteemed leader in wind ensemble music.
“This experience was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students,” said Michael Shoremount, Rustin’s Band Director. “The students worked incredibly hard for several months inside and out of school to have an exceptional performance.”
The trip extended beyond music, offering students the chance to explore Chicago’s history, architecture, and arts. From city landmarks to shared meals, the band members returned home with memories of both personal and musical growth.
Senior section leader Arden Messinger reflected on the experience, saying, “Performing at Chicago Symphony Hall was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had. It was super intimidating, but I’ve also never felt more prepared. I am so grateful to Mr. Shoremount and everyone who conducted clinics for the band – they gave us every tool we needed to do our best on that stage.”
Another senior section leader, Wyatt Reigner, added, “The trip was a ton of fun, and playing on that stage was pretty cool. All the bands sounded fantastic, and it was a great feeling to see our hard work come together in a big way. It was a great honor to be chosen to perform at the festival.”
The event not only highlighted the band’s exceptional talent but also brought pride to Rustin High School and the West Chester community. Students came back inspired by their achievements and the unity created through their shared experience.
