PHILADELPHIA, PA — Step back into the moment that put Philadelphia on the world stage. A new immersive exhibit arriving in Center City this summer will transport visitors to 1876, when the city welcomed millions for the nation’s first World’s Fair—and helped shape the future of innovation, culture, and tourism.

Timed to coincide with Philadelphia’s 250th anniversary celebrations, Revisit 1876 will open in late June inside the historic Lits Building, inviting residents and visitors alike to rediscover the sights, sounds, and stories of the Centennial Exhibition.

At a time when the entire U.S. population was just 46 million, more than 10 million people from 37 countries traveled to Philadelphia for the 1876 World’s Fair. Now, nearly 150 years later, this new exhibit brings that global moment back to life through a series of large-scale, immersive pavilions.

Visitors will encounter recreations inspired by the Exhibition’s grand halls, where groundbreaking inventions once stunned audiences—from Alexander Graham Bell’s first telephone to massive steam engines, locomotives, and early consumer products like typewriters, popcorn, and root beer. The exhibit also explores deeper stories, including the debut of the first women’s pavilion and the complex realities of inclusion and exclusion during that era.

But Revisit 1876 doesn’t stop at history. It draws a direct line from the past to present-day Philadelphia, highlighting how remnants of the Centennial Exhibition still shape the city today—from artifacts at The Franklin Institute to Memorial Hall, now home to the Please Touch Museum.

“Our goal is to Revisit 1876, but also invite visitors, residents and families to explore destinations today that directly connect to the Centennial Exhibition,” said Paul R. Levy, executive director of the Center City District Foundation. “As we celebrate our 250th, we invite guests to look back and forward for a deeper understanding of today’s challenges and opportunities.”
