PHILADELPHIA, PA — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a 29-year-old Mexican national at Philadelphia International Airport on Saturday after learning she was wanted in Delaware on charges connected to a fatal vehicle incident.
Officials said CBP officers intercepted Angelica M. Escobar-Castaneda of New Castle, Delaware, as she prepared to board a flight to Mexico City. Escobar-Castaneda, a Mexican citizen and lawful permanent resident of the United States, was identified as the subject of an active warrant for operating a vehicle causing the death of another.
CBP officers confirmed the warrant with the Delaware Attorney General’s Office before taking Escobar-Castaneda into custody. She was turned over to Tinicum Township Police to begin extradition proceedings to Delaware.
Cleatus P. Hunt, Jr., CBP’s Area Port Director for Philadelphia, said the agency’s role in tracking travelers allows it to support local authorities. “It is one way that we can help our law enforcement partners make our streets a little safer,” Hunt stated.
Authorities emphasized that criminal charges are allegations, and Escobar-Castaneda, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
