Curve Turns Deadly: Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Smyrna Motorcycle Crash

SMYRNA, DEDelaware State Police are investigating a single-vehicle motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a Clayton man early Friday morning.

Authorities said the crash occurred on September 5, 2025, at approximately 4:16 a.m. when a Yamaha X1A motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Smyrna-Leipsic Road, east of Big Oak Road.

According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve, left the south edge of the roadway, and entered a ditch where it struck a culvert pipe. The impact caused the driver to be ejected.

The rider, a 59-year-old man from Clayton, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His name is being withheld until family members are notified.

Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation

Smyrna-Leipsic Road was closed for an extended period as investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway.

The case remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit.
