FirstEnergy Powers Northampton County Growth with New Klecknersville Substation

Metropolitan Edison Company (Met-Ed)

READING, PA — More than 5,000 homes and businesses in Northampton County are now receiving electricity from the newly energized Klecknersville Substation, a FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (locally known as Met-Ed) project aimed at boosting reliability and supporting regional development.

The facility replaces long-distance feeds from Palmer Township’s Northwood Substation with shorter, more resilient lines equipped with smart grid technology. Automated systems can detect and isolate problems, reroute power during outages, and pinpoint damage locations for faster repairs. Wildlife guards have also been installed to reduce animal-related disruptions.

The project, five years in development, is part of FirstEnergy’s $28 billion Energize365 initiative to modernize the grid across its multi-state service area through 2029.
