PHILADELPHIA, PA — The 2025 Laboratory Leadership Report, released this week, reveals that diagnostic laboratory leaders view digital pathology and artificial intelligence (AI) as crucial to advancing precision medicine. The findings highlight a sector increasingly focused on modernization amidst challenges such as staffing shortages and financial pressures.
Conducted by The Dark Intelligence Group on behalf of Proscia®, the report surveyed 360 senior professionals from independent, hospital, and academic laboratories. The results underscore AI-driven pathology’s pivotal role in transforming healthcare delivery.
“We’re seeing a clear signal from the market,” said Nathan Buchbinder, Chief Strategy Officer at Proscia. “Laboratory leaders believe that AI-driven pathology is not only ready, but essential to meeting the demands of modern healthcare. They’re now focused on getting adoption right—especially as strain from persistent industry challenges continues to intensify.”
Rising Pressures Push Laboratories Toward Technology
Staffing shortages emerged as the most pressing challenge for 38% of laboratory leaders, followed by declining reimbursements, cited by 31%. Regulatory compliance and adapting to new tests and technologies were lesser concerns, illustrating the urgent need to address operational and financial strain.
To combat these pressures, laboratories are prioritizing longer-term transformation through technology. Top opportunities identified include automation to boost efficiency (30%), molecular and genetic testing (29%), and AI to enhance diagnostic accuracy (25%). These trends reflect an industry shift toward digital tools that promise sustainable benefits over temporary fixes.
AI-Driven Pathology and Precision Medicine
The report highlights the growing role of AI in fostering precision medicine, with 86% of respondents agreeing that the field has moved beyond the hype. Laboratories associate it with improved treatment efficacy (80%), more accurate diagnoses (75%), and enhanced patient outcomes (61%).
Importantly, 59% of senior professionals believe digital pathology and AI will have a significant impact in realizing precision medicine’s full potential. These technologies help laboratories optimize workflows, deliver precise results, and meet the increasing demand for advanced diagnostics.
Trusted Partnerships Accelerate Adoption
Effective technology adoption requires strong collaboration with vendors. According to the report, 64% of laboratory leaders value reputation, 54% prioritize customer references, and 46% emphasize vision when selecting a technology partner.
Additionally, decision-makers seek comprehensive and user-friendly solutions, with nearly half ranking functionality (47%) and ease of use (45%) as top priorities. These preferences reflect laboratories’ desire for seamless integration and reliable, long-term partnerships to support their transformation efforts.
By leveraging digital pathology and AI, laboratories are not only addressing immediate operational challenges but also laying the groundwork for a new era of precision medicine. These technologies promise to reshape healthcare by enabling more accurate diagnoses, effective treatments, and improved patient care.
