PennDOT Announces Major Roadway Reconstruction in Middletown Township

Lane restrictions

MIDDLETOWN TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced an extensive roadway reconstruction project set to begin on Monday, June 16, in Middletown Township, Bucks County. The $10.6 million initiative focuses on improving traffic congestion and safety on Langhorne-Yardley Road at the Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road intersections.

From June 16 through Friday, August 15, Langhorne-Yardley Road will be closed 24/7 at the Bridgetown Pike intersection to accommodate construction. During this period, motorists will be detoured via Woodbourne Road, Route 332 (Newtown Bypass), and Route 413 (Langhorne Newtown Road). Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone, but drivers should anticipate delays and allow extra travel time. All scheduled activities are weather-dependent.

Key elements of the project include the replacement of the current signalized T-intersection at Langhorne-Yardley Road and Bridgetown Pike with a single-lane roundabout. According to PennDOT, this design aims to improve safety and traffic flow by reducing vehicle speeds.

Additionally, the project encompasses improvements at the Langhorne-Yardley Road and Woodbourne Road intersection, including the realignment of the northern leg of Woodbourne Road and the addition of auxiliary turn lanes on all four approaches. On the eastern leg of Woodbourne Road, a left-turn lane will be introduced to improve movement on Langhorne-Yardley Road near Erica Drive.

The initiative also prioritizes pedestrian and bicyclist mobility. Planned enhancements include Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at key pedestrian crossings, five-foot-wide paved shoulders, new paved paths connecting intersections to Core Creek Park, and the construction of sidewalks along Langhorne-Yardley Road.

James D. Morrissey, Inc. of Philadelphia has been appointed as the general contractor for this federally funded project, with 80 percent of costs covered by federal resources and the remaining 20 percent by state funds. PennDOT emphasizes that the comprehensive upgrades will not only enhance safety but also address the long-term infrastructure needs of the Middletown Township community.

Motorists are urged to follow posted detour signs and exercise caution near work zones to ensure safety for both workers and road users.
