Pennsylvania DEP Announces Significant Funding for Environmental Education

August 25, 2024August 24, 2024 - by Maryann Pugh
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection

HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is making nearly $1 million available to support environmental education and stewardship projects across the state. This initiative aims to engage Pennsylvanians in understanding and addressing issues related to clean water, climate change, and particularly focuses on environmental justice communities—areas more vulnerable to climate-related impacts and pollution.

The 2025 Environmental Education Grants Program invites applications up until November 15, 2024. Eligible entities, including schools, colleges, non-profit organizations, county conservation districts, and businesses, are encouraged to apply. The program offers up to $5,000 for local projects and up to $30,000 for regional or statewide initiatives. Projects with a broader impact, engaging participants from at least 60 counties, can receive as much as $65,000.

Funding will be provided on a reimbursement basis, requiring projects to be executed between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. This grant cycle continues the DEP’s efforts to empower communities through education, fostering informed decision-making and responsible environmental actions.

DEP will host a webinar on October 10, 2024, to guide applicants through the proposal process and offer tips for successful applications. This session will also address any questions prospective applicants may have. Registration for the webinar is required by September 30, 2024.

The Environmental Education Grants Program, established under the Environmental Education Act of 1993, has been instrumental in enhancing environmental literacy across Pennsylvania. By setting aside 5% of the pollution fines and penalties collected annually, the program has funded over 2,200 projects, distributing more than $14 million since its inception.

This funding opportunity is intended as a strategic investment in Pennsylvania’s future, aiming to cultivate a more environmentally conscious and proactive citizenry. The DEP’s continued commitment to education ensures that communities, particularly those facing disproportionate environmental challenges, are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary for sustainable living.
