LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA — For nearly three quarters Saturday afternoon, the Oxford Golden Bears 13U squad was searching for an answer.
They found one in the fourth quarter. By then, however, the Marple Junior Tigers had built just enough of a lead—and controlled the clock just well enough—to leave Lincoln University Stadium with a 13-7 victory.
For Oxford, the final score told only part of the story. The Golden Bears battled a Marple team that entered the game ranked second among the league’s 22 teams, and Oxford’s defense kept the game within striking distance long enough to give its offense a chance. But after three scoreless quarters, the Bears’ fourth-quarter spark arrived too late.
Marple took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter after repeatedly keeping the ball on Oxford’s side of the field. The Tigers began one scoring drive at the Oxford 22-yard line and needed just five plays to reach the end zone.
Oxford had opportunities of its own. A seven-play drive in the second quarter covered 34 yards but ended with a turnover on downs, leaving the Bears still searching for their first points. At halftime, Marple held a 7-0 advantage.
The Tigers extended their lead in the third quarter with a nine-play, 53-yard touchdown drive, putting Oxford in a 13-0 hole heading into the final period.
Then came the moment the Golden Bears had been waiting for.
Early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Emilio Lara aired it out, connecting with Gabe Armideo on a 36-yard, deep strike touchdown, cutting the deficit to 13-7 and suddenly giving Oxford life. Armideo’s performance was particularly notable: he executed the deep catch while wearing a cast on his right hand due to a broken thumb suffered the previous week against Avon Grove.
The touchdown was more than a score. It was a glimpse of what Oxford’s offense had shown throughout the season—flashes of the ability to make big plays, even when sustaining that production for an entire game has proved difficult.
Operating behind a Front Five that fought through an aggressive blitz to surrender zero sacks on the afternoon, Lara finished 5-of-10 passing for 55 yards and a touchdown. Armideo accounted for two receptions and all 36 yards of the touchdown connection, while Connor Hankins added two catches for 19 yards, and Elijah Riehl contributed a gritty reception to round out the air attack.
But Marple answered in the way a team of its standing knows how to answer.
Starting from its own 17-yard line, the Tigers embarked on a 14-play, 81-yard drive that consumed the remainder of the game. Oxford never got another offensive possession.
That final drive was perhaps the hardest part of the afternoon for the Golden Bears. After finally breaking through and giving themselves a chance, Oxford could only watch as Marple methodically moved the ball and allowed the clock to disappear.
The numbers illustrate just how difficult the afternoon was. Marple ran 43 plays to Oxford’s 22 and finished with 245 total yards compared with Oxford’s 94. The Tigers also held a commanding advantage on the ground, rushing for 179 yards to the Bears’ 46.
Yet Oxford’s defense deserves credit for keeping the game from getting away.
Over the past three games, the unit continues improving, and Saturday was another example. The Bears showcased tremendous defensive depth, flying to the ball to record 16 different players with a tackle on the stat sheet. The effort was headlined by middle linebacker Zaiden Palmer, who racked up four solo tackles and 10 assists.
Defensive end Elijah Riehl anchored the perimeter with a solo tackle and 12 assists, while fellow defensive end Bradley Seeger logged a solo tackle, a tackle for loss, and seven assists. On the interior, defensive tackle Parker Kloss put on a clinic, securing two tackles for loss and six assists.
For a team that entered Saturday having already suffered losses to Coatesville in Week 1 and Avon Grove the previous week, the defeat was another difficult result. But against a Marple team near the top of the league, Oxford remained competitive deep into the afternoon and showed once again that it can create opportunities against strong competition.
That may be little consolation to the Golden Bears players and the Oxford supporters who watched Saturday’s comeback attempt disappear with the final Marple possession.
The Bears wanted more. They had finally found the end zone, had narrowed the gap to one score and had given themselves a reason to believe. Instead, the final whistle arrived with Oxford seven points short.
The loss will sting. But there was something else visible beneath the disappointment: a defense that continues to improve, an offense still capable of producing moments of brilliance, and a team that, despite the result, continues to fight.
There will be little time for the Golden Bears to dwell on Saturday’s disappointment. At 0-3, Oxford returns to action next Saturday, September 19, when it travels to Kelly Field to face the 2-1 West Chester Shamrocks at 6:30 p.m. West Chester enters the matchup having played three one-score games, including a close victory over Avon Grove, the same team that edged Oxford the previous week.
