KENNETT TWP, PA — Motorists traveling U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) through Kennett and East Marlborough townships should prepare for two weeks of around-the-clock lane restrictions beginning Monday, November 9, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) schedules additional road construction along a recently widened section of the highway in Chester County.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) in both directions between Greenwood Road and Schoolhouse Road.
- Dates: Monday, November 9, through Friday, November 20, 2026.
- Times: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Reason: Remaining road construction under the U.S. 1 widening and improvement project.
Lane closures will remain in place continuously throughout the scheduled construction period, affecting eastbound and westbound traffic between Greenwood Road and Schoolhouse Road.
PennDOT warns that backups and delays may occur through the work zone. Drivers should allow extra travel time, particularly during morning and evening commuting periods, and remain alert for changing traffic patterns.
The restrictions follow substantial completion of a 1.3-mile highway improvement project extending from the Kennett Oxford Bypass to Greenwood Road.
The project added a third travel lane in each direction along portions of U.S. 1, using existing shoulders and right-turn lanes to accommodate additional traffic capacity elsewhere along the corridor.
Other improvements included pavement resurfacing, new sidewalks between Schoolhouse Road and the Longwood Village Shopping Center entrance, two electronic message signs and upgrades to five signalized intersections.
The project also eliminated left turns from Orchard Avenue onto U.S. 1.
Although major construction concluded in late July, periodic lane closures are expected to continue through late 2026 while crews finish minor construction activities.
Allan Myers LP of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor. The project is financed entirely with federal funds.
All scheduled work is weather dependent.
