WILMINGTON, DE — A 50-year-old man is facing assault and firearm charges after Wilmington police said an investigation into a Sunday evening shooting led to his arrest and the seizure of two handguns.
Officers responded at approximately 7:15 p.m. Sept. 13 to the 300 block of Christiana Avenue for a reported shooting, according to police.
Police said officers found a 39-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
The case was assigned to Detective Joran Merced of the Criminal Investigations Division. During the investigation, police said Merced identified Mileonce Cherazard, 50, as the suspect.
A short time later, New Castle County police located Cherazard in the 100 block of Jillians Way in New Castle, where he was taken into custody without incident, according to Wilmington police.
Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant in the 100 block of Jillians Way and recovered two 9mm handguns, police said.
Cherazard was charged with first-degree assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and three counts of aggravated menacing.
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $138,000 cash-only bail, according to police.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
