Wilmington Man Charged With Attempted Murder in Hatchet Attack

WILMINGTON, DE — A 41-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after Wilmington police say a man was critically injured in a hatchet attack Saturday afternoon.

Police said officers responded to the 1200 block of Maryland Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. Oct. 4 for a report of a man armed with a hatchet.

Upon arrival, officers found a male victim suffering from a laceration, according to police. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said officers later observed a man matching the suspect description in the 800 block of Maryland Avenue and identified him as Daniel Eberly, 41.

Eberly was taken into custody without incident, and officers recovered a hatchet, according to police.

Eberly was charged with first-degree attempted murder, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony and possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited.

He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $163,000 cash-only bail, according to police.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
