WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man is facing felony firearms charges after New Castle County police said detectives conducting proactive patrols found a loaded handgun with an extended magazine during a traffic stop Sept. 8.
Detectives assigned to the New Castle County Division of Police Active Crime Trends Team were patrolling the Pennrose community at approximately 6:44 p.m. when they observed a Chevrolet Trax commit a traffic violation, according to police.
Detectives stopped the vehicle in the 4100 block of Market Street and identified the passenger as Jalen Jackson, 28, of Wilmington, police said.
According to police, investigators determined Jackson had multiple outstanding warrants and detained him.
As the investigation continued, officers located a bag inside the vehicle that police said belonged to Jackson. Investigators reported finding a fully loaded handgun with an extended magazine inside the bag.
Police transported Jackson to New Castle County Police Headquarters, where he was charged with felony possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and felony possession of ammunition by a person prohibited. He was also cited for possession of a large-capacity magazine, a civil violation.
Jackson was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $30,100 cash bail.
The driver was not charged and was released, according to police.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
