WILMINGTON, DE — A 14-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after police reported a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle early Friday morning in Wilmington.
According to the New Castle County Division of Police, officers responded around 3:18 a.m. April 17 to the 400 block of South Scott Street for a report of a recently stolen Kia Optima.
Police said an officer located the vehicle while searching the area and attempted to initiate a traffic stop by activating emergency equipment. Authorities reported the driver allegedly refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed.
According to investigators, the vehicle then struck a tree in the Canby Park community. Police said the driver allegedly fled on foot but was quickly apprehended after a brief pursuit.
The suspect, identified by police as a 14-year-old male from Wilmington, was taken into custody and transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters.
Authorities reported the juvenile was charged with felony counts of possession of burglary tools, theft of a motor vehicle, and second-degree conspiracy, as well as misdemeanor counts including theft under $1,500, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, and a loitering violation.
Police said the juvenile was arraigned in New Castle County Family Court and released on $13,000 unsecured bail.
A second juvenile who was present during the incident was released without charges, according to police.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
