NEWARK, DE — A 23-year-old Pennsylvania man has been charged after police say officers allegedly recovered marijuana and a loaded handgun during a traffic stop earlier this month.
According to Newark police, officers with the Special Operations Unit conducted a traffic stop at approximately 3:19 p.m. April 15 in the area of Elkton Road and O’Daniel Avenue after observing a vehicle with an illegally tinted front windshield.
Police reported that during the stop, officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Investigators said a subsequent search allegedly led to the recovery of approximately 169 grams of marijuana and a loaded 9mm handgun concealed in the center console.
Authorities identified the driver as David Sierra, 23, of Oxford, Pennsylvania. Police stated Sierra was determined not to be impaired and was taken into custody without incident before being transported to Newark Police Department headquarters for processing.
According to police, Sierra has been charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession or consumption of marijuana other than for personal use based on quantity, and a safety glass requirement violation.
Court records show Sierra was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court No. 11, issued $5,101 unsecured bail, and released.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
