Pedestrian Killed in Wilmington Crash Involving Dump Truck

WILMINGTON, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian Wednesday morning in Wilmington.

According to investigators, the collision occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on June 24 at the intersection of Brookside Drive and North Maryland Avenue.

Police reported that a Peterbilt dump truck was stopped at a red light on northbound Brookside Drive while a pedestrian was walking westbound on the sidewalk along the eastbound side of North Maryland Avenue and approaching the intersection.

The preliminary investigation indicates that after the traffic signal turned green, the dump truck began making a left turn onto westbound North Maryland Avenue. As the truck was turning, police said, the pedestrian entered the vehicle’s path and was struck by the front of the truck.

The pedestrian, a 57-year-old Wilmington man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

The driver of the dump truck, a 47-year-old man from Smyrna, was not injured.

Police said the roadway remained closed for approximately 2½ hours while investigators processed the scene and cleared the roadway.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash.
