Man Flees Police, Arrested With Loaded Gun in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DE — A 23-year-old man has been charged after police say he allegedly fled from officers and was later found in possession of a loaded handgun.

According to Wilmington police, officers with the Gun Intelligence Unit were in the area of Sherman and North Lombard streets at approximately 12:18 p.m. April 21 when they observed a man acting suspiciously.

Police reported that officers attempted to make contact with the individual in the 500 block of East 10th Street, at which point he allegedly fled on foot. Investigators said the man was taken into custody a short time later without further incident.

Authorities identified the individual as Avery Brown, 23. Police said officers recovered a loaded 9mm handgun.

According to police, Brown has been charged with two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and resisting arrest.

Court records show Brown was arraigned in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $30,500 cash-only bail.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
