HARRISBURG, PA — A Lebanon County jury convicted a Northumberland County man Wednesday of rape and related offenses involving the sexual abuse of a preteen child more than a decade ago, with sentencing scheduled for November.
Derrick Miller, 45, of Herndon, was found guilty following a two-day trial of rape, statutory sexual assault, indecent assault, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.
Prosecutors alleged Miller, who was an acquaintance of the child’s family, sexually assaulted the victim while they were alone in a bedroom between 2013 and 2014. The abuse was reported years later after the victim disclosed what had occurred.
Attorney General Dave Sunday credited the victim’s testimony with securing the conviction.
“I commend the brave survivor of this assault for having the courage to speak up with an initial report, then again in court, where her testimony ensured this child rapist was held accountable for what he did,” Sunday said.
Lebanon County President Judge John C. Tylwalk, who presided over the trial, is scheduled to sentence Miller on Nov. 18. At sentencing, the judge will also determine whether Miller will be designated a sexually violent predator.
