Fatal Police Shooting Under Investigation in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DE — Authorities are investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred late Wednesday night in Wilmington.

According to Wilmington Police, officers on patrol in the area of 24th and Jessup streets at approximately 11:12 p.m. observed a large crowd gathered in the area.

Police reported that officers then saw a 19-year-old man exit a residence while allegedly armed with a handgun and point the firearm toward the crowd.

According to investigators, officers approached the man, who allegedly fled on foot. During the ensuing foot pursuit, police said an officer discharged a department-issued firearm, striking the suspect.

The 19-year-old was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to police.

Investigators reported recovering a loaded handgun from the suspect. Police said the involved officer was not injured.

The incident is being investigated by the Wilmington Police Criminal Investigations Division, the Office of Professional Standards and the Delaware Department of Justice, according to authorities.

Police said the investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
