NEW CASTLE, DE — A 34-year-old man has been charged following a crash into a residence that police say escalated into a confrontation involving a firearm and threats to bystanders.

New Castle County Police reported that officers responded at approximately 1:37 a.m. Sunday, April 26, to the 100 block of Bunche Boulevard for a vehicle crash involving a home.

According to investigators, officers located an unoccupied silver Dodge Charger that had struck a residence and a parked vehicle. Police said the driver was identified as Shayron Barksdale, 34, of Middletown, who was later located and taken into custody in the 400 block of Carver Drive.

Authorities reported that Barksdale allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication following his arrest.

According to police, after the crash, Barksdale was approached by individuals attempting to check on his condition when he allegedly produced a handgun and threatened to shoot them before fleeing the scene.

Police said officers, including OFC. Currinder and K9 Indy, conducted a search of the area. During the search, investigators reported that a loaded handgun was located in a backyard in the 400 block of Carver Drive, where Barksdale was last seen.

Further investigation determined that the crash caused bricks from the residence to dislodge and strike a sleeping occupant, resulting in minor injuries, according to police. Authorities said the debris also narrowly missed a crib containing a sleeping infant.
