MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Overnight drivers using the Schuylkill Expressway and Blue Route should prepare for major detours and lane restrictions over the coming weeks as PennDOT continues a large-scale resurfacing and bridge repair project along Interstate 476.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: I-476, I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), Matsonford Road ramps
- Dates: Through Friday, June 5
- Times: Weeknights, 8:00 PM – 5:00 AM; select ramp closures 10:00 PM – 9:00 AM
- Reason: Milling, paving, bridge repair, and guiderail replacement
PennDOT’s most disruptive closure is scheduled for Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, when the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to southbound I-476 will shut down overnight in West Conshohocken Borough and Lower Merion Township for milling and paving operations.
Drivers will be directed to follow posted detour routes around the closure. Motorists traveling through the I-76/I-476 interchange should expect backups and slower overnight travel throughout the project area.
Additional overnight restrictions are already underway through Friday, June 5, with lane closures affecting sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges in Delaware and Montgomery counties.
PennDOT is also scheduled to close the ramps from northbound I-476 and eastbound I-76 to Matsonford Road on Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, from 10:00 PM to 9:00 AM for paving and bridge repair work.
The $63.7 million federally funded project includes resurfacing nearly 17 miles of I-476, repairing 49 structures, stabilizing rock slopes, upgrading stormwater systems, replacing guiderail, and installing new pavement markings and signage aimed at improving ride quality and long-term safety.
Plan extra time, expect overnight congestion, and seek alternate routes where possible during active construction periods. All scheduled work is weather dependent.
