PHILADELPHIA, PA — A national nonprofit has released new data showing Pennsylvania drivers could save up to $3,000 annually by switching to electric vehicles as gasoline prices rise.

Coltura said its Weekly EV Cost Savings Index estimates that drivers who travel 25,000 miles per year could save more than $3,000 annually on fuel and maintenance, while those driving 15,000 miles could save about $1,800.

The analysis also found that Pennsylvania drivers could save an average of 12 cents per mile by switching from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric models under current fuel and electricity prices.

The tool calculates savings based on factors including mileage, vehicle type, and local energy costs, and is updated weekly to reflect changes in gas and electricity prices.

Users can adjust inputs such as annual mileage and vehicle type, and view estimated savings per mile, per trip, and per month.

Coltura said higher gasoline prices have increased the potential savings, noting that prices have risen more than 30 percent since late February amid global conflict affecting oil markets.

Janelle London, co-executive director of Coltura, said the tool is designed to help drivers evaluate potential cost differences based on their individual driving patterns.

“The savings depend on how much you drive, what vehicle you drive, and where you live,” London said. “We built this tool so any driver can enter their own information and see exactly what they’d save.”

David Masur, executive director of PennEnvironment, said reducing gasoline use could lower costs for drivers while decreasing vehicle emissions.

“These tools can help expedite Pennsylvania’s transition to cleaner, healthier, and more affordable transportation choices,” Masur said.
