WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County ACEs Coalition marked its 10th anniversary after training nearly 14,000 people over the past decade to recognize childhood trauma and its effects, reflecting a countywide effort to expand trauma awareness through schools, faith groups and community organizations.
Established in 2016 and initially led by several nonprofits, including Home of the Sparrow, the coalition focuses on Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, as well as trauma and toxic stress.
The organization transitioned to the Chester County Health Department in 2020 with funding from the county Department of Children, Youth and Families.
Its work centers on education, prevention, resilience-building and connecting people affected by trauma with community support.
“Having open conversations about trauma and its effects not only contributes to the long-term health benefits of people who’ve experienced trauma, but it strengthens our community,” coalition coordinator Chelsea Kunkel said.
The coalition recently recognized its anniversary with an event honoring partner organizations, its Leadership Committee, community advocates, Resilience Champions and others involved in its development.
Chester County Health Director Jeanne Franklin said more than 60% of adults have reported experiencing at least one Adverse Childhood Experience, including abuse, neglect or household challenges.
“Over the past decade, the Coalition has trained nearly 14,000 individuals to become more trauma-aware and helped those exposed to trauma build connections, get support, and begin to heal,” Franklin said.
The coalition’s work has been supported by partnerships with schools, faith groups and community organizations across Chester County.
