Reliance Matrix Reaches 8 Million Digital Claims Milestone

Reliance Matrix

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Reliance Matrix has processed its 8 millionth electronic benefits claim, a milestone that reflects the insurance and absence-management industry’s long-term shift from paper-based administration to digital claims processing.

Approximately 60% of the company’s disability and employee benefits claims are now submitted electronically through online, mobile and other digital channels.

The milestone highlights how benefits administrators have increasingly adopted technology to manage employee leave, disability and related claims as employers seek faster processing, greater transparency and improved workforce management tools.

Reliance Matrix was formed through the integration of Reliance Standard Life Insurance Company and Matrix Absence Management, a third-party administrator specializing in leave and absence programs.

Matrix Absence Management traces its roots to workers’ compensation administration in California during the 1980s and later expanded its role in leave management following implementation of the Family and Medical Leave Act in 1993.

“A generation ago, we decided our success would be tied to solving business challenges for our clients and brokers,” Matrix Absence Management President Mark Marsters said. “Our legacy as a tech innovator actually started out of a commitment to forging deep relationships with our clients and partners.”

The company noted that its progression toward digital claims filing began with telephone-based claim intake before expanding to web-based and mobile submission systems.

Reliance Matrix has also developed workforce management technologies designed to help employers administer employee leave programs.

Among those tools is Absence Radar, which provides managers with a rolling view of approved employee absences, and Absence Blueprint, which helps employees estimate available leave time, income replacement and job-protection benefits using company policies and statutory programs.

Customer Care Manager Matt Lochner reflected on the evolution of claims administration over the years.

“When I think of the manual processes back then, compared to the automation and capabilities we have today, it’s pretty amazing,” Lochner said.

The milestone comes as employers continue increasing investment in technology platforms designed to automate benefits administration and employee absence management.
