PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a much-anticipated announcement, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Orlando Rendon declared the return of the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run to its traditional date and course. Slated for Sunday, May 5, 2024, the nation’s largest 10-mile road race will start at 7:30 a.m., half an hour earlier than usual due to a scheduled Phillies game.

The Broad Street Run, a beloved Philadelphia tradition, was displaced from its usual first Sunday in May slot last year due to another Phillies game. This year, while the game remains, it has only nudged the race’s start time forward, allowing the event to reclaim its customary date.

Additionally, the 2024 run will see participants finishing at the Navy Yard, reinstating the race’s classic straightforward course from Somerville and Broad with no turns. Construction at the Navy Yard had necessitated a change in the finish line for the 2021-2023 races.

Mayor Parker expressed delight at the return to normalcy, stating, “This race always generates excitement and enthusiasm not only for the runners but for their families and friends who come out to cheer them on. We wish every participant a safe, healthy, and fun experience on Broad Street on May 5th!”

Commissioner Rendon echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude towards the Parks & Rec staff who had worked tirelessly to keep the race going amid the disruptions of the pandemic and construction.

The Broad Street Run has long been sponsored by Independence Blue Cross, a partnership that underscores the company’s commitment to preventive health and fitness. Gregory E. Deavens, president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross, noted that teams of IBX associates would be participating in the race and volunteering as they do each year.

The race will be broadcast live by NBC10 from 7:30 a.m. and streamed live on all digital platforms. Spanish-speaking viewers can tune into Telemundo62 for live coverage of the race from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., with a complete simulcast available on Telemundo Noreste on all streaming platforms.

Registration for the 2024 Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run will open on February 1 and close on February 15. The race can accommodate up to 40,000 runners, who will be accepted either through a lottery system or by running on behalf of a charity partner. Lottery participants will be notified of their status the week of February 19.

The return of the Broad Street Run to its traditional date and course marks a significant milestone in Philadelphia’s journey towards post-pandemic normalcy. As one of the city’s most cherished events, the race’s restoration is sure to be eagerly welcomed by Philadelphians.
