PHILADELPHIA, PA — Overnight drivers on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia could face severe backups next week as PennDOT crews reduce northbound traffic to a single lane for barrier adjustment work tied to a major reconstruction project.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, a double lane closure will be in place overnight on northbound I-95 as crews continue work under the $355.3 million I-95/BR3 improvement project.
The ongoing project will widen and reconstruct northbound I-95 between Wheatsheaf Lane and an area just north of Margaret Street, a heavily traveled section of the corridor used by commuters, freight traffic, and regional travelers.
Motorists should expect significant backups and delays approaching the work zone, particularly during late-night freight and airport traffic hours. Drivers are encouraged to plan extra time, reduce speeds in the construction area, and seek alternate routes when possible.
No detour was announced, but travelers may want to consider alternate north-south routes through the city to avoid congestion near the Allegheny and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges.
PennDOT noted that all scheduled operations are weather dependent and could be rescheduled if conditions warrant.
