Nighttime Milling to Begin on Route 222 in Lancaster County

Traffic Alert

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the start of milling operations on northbound Route 222 in Lancaster County as part of an extensive pavement preservation project. Work will focus on the stretch from the Mohler Church Road overpass in Ephrata Township to Col. Howard Boulevard at the Denver/PA Turnpike Exit in East Cocalico Township.

Weather permitting, milling is scheduled from Tuesday, April 22, through Thursday, April 24, between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM nightly. Following this period, nighttime work will continue Sunday through Thursday each week. Short-term lane restrictions will be in place during these hours to minimize disruptions to traffic.

In addition to the milling operations, the project includes constructing a new access road to the northbound Route 222 weigh station between the Lancaster County line and the Adamstown/Knauers Exit in Berks County. Currently, a long-term shoulder restriction is in effect for the weigh station work, which is being conducted during daytime hours.

Other planned traffic impacts involve periodic shoulder closures near the Ephrata Exit and potential weekend closures for bridge work, with updates to be announced in advance.

This $7.6 million project also includes bituminous resurfacing, base repairs, guide rail updates, concrete patching, line painting, and sign replacements. New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc., based in New Enterprise, PA, is managing the construction. Completion is expected by February 2026, barring any weather delays.

Motorists are advised to plan additional travel time in the vicinity of the work zones and to expect potential delays during construction activities.
