NEWARK, DE — N-Zyme Biomedical has raised approximately $4.6 million in a Series A financing, providing enough capital to fund planned Phase 2 clinical studies of its investigational reflux therapy in two patient populations.
The company reported the financing closed July 22 and will support Phase 2 programs for laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), along with regulatory, manufacturing and business development activities.
N-Zyme is developing a treatment designed to inhibit pepsin, a digestive enzyme believed to contribute to tissue damage and persistent symptoms associated with reflux disease. The approach differs from conventional therapies, which primarily reduce stomach acid production.
The financing was backed by healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, a venture capital firm and strategic investors, according to the company, though individual investors and ownership stakes were not disclosed.
Chief Executive Officer Franco Vigile characterized the financing as enabling the company’s next stage of clinical development.
“Their investment enables us to accelerate our Phase 2 clinical programs and brings us one step closer to delivering a first-in-class therapy for the millions of patients worldwide who continue to live with significant unmet medical needs,” Vigile stated.
Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Nikki Johnston indicated the funding will allow the company to continue evaluating its therapeutic approach through mid-stage clinical trials and generate additional clinical evidence.
In addition to advancing its clinical programs, N-Zyme plans to use the proceeds to expand its intellectual property portfolio, pursue strategic partnerships and support general corporate operations.
The financing follows the launch of the company’s Phase 2 study in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux and is intended to fully fund the planned Phase 2 development program for patients with PPI-refractory GERD.
