PHILADELPHIA, PA — Baseball Hall of Famer and melanoma survivor Mike Schmidt will lead a skin-cancer prevention presentation Sept. 3 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, using his experience with the disease to encourage sun protection among players and fans.

The “Play Sun Safe” presentation will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the stadium’s general admission area before that evening’s Wilmington Blue Rocks game. It will be open to everyone attending the game.

Dermatology Partners is organizing the event with the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation and the Mike Schmidt Foundation. The organizations are using baseball events to distribute sunscreen and provide skin-cancer education across Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.

“As a professional baseball player, I spent most of my career in the sun—without sunscreen,” Schmidt stated. “While my career was thriving, my skin was being damaged by the harmful rays of the sun.”

Schmidt, who played his entire 18-season Major League Baseball career with the Philadelphia Phillies, stated that his melanoma diagnosis motivated him to teach younger players and fans about skin protection.

Dermatology Partners will distribute free sunscreen samples and educational materials during the presentation.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and an estimated one in five Americans will develop it during their lifetime.
