PHILADELPHIA, PA — Matera has launched payment software built around a newly approved U.S. QR code standard, giving banks, processors and billers a way to route account-to-account transactions across networks including FedNow, RTP, ACH and Zelle.

The platform is compliant with the ANSI X9.150 Merchant-Presented Payment QR Code Standard, which establishes a common format for payment requests scanned through authenticated banking and payment applications.

Matera’s software allows QR codes to be placed on printed or digital invoices, restaurant bills, online checkout pages and point-of-sale displays. Consumers can scan the code within a mobile banking app, review the payment details and authorize the transaction.

The company is positioning the product as an interoperability layer for financial institutions seeking to support multiple payment methods without deploying separate QR code systems for each network. The platform can also accommodate emerging digital payment methods, including stablecoins.

Unlike QR codes that direct users to a website, X9.150 codes are processed inside an authenticated financial application. Digital signatures supported by the X9 Financial Public Key Infrastructure allow the application to verify that a payment request is authentic and has not been altered before authorization.

“X9.150 provides that foundation,” Matera Chief Executive Officer Carlos Netto stated. “Our Payment QR Code platform gives banks a practical way to implement a single QR code standard while preserving the flexibility to support multiple payment methods.”

The software supports immediate and future-dated payments, discounts, late fees, promotional offers and variable payment amounts. It can also process full, minimum or merchant-defined payments and accommodate preset or custom gratuities.

Matera reports that its technology processes more than 3.6 billion QR code transactions annually, including during high-volume retail periods such as Black Friday.

The company participated in developing the X9.150 standard, which is intended to reduce fragmentation in U.S. account-to-account payments and make QR payment requests usable across participating banks and payment networks.

Matera’s Payment QR Code software is available immediately to financial institutions, payment processors and technology providers implementing the standard.
