HATBORO, PA — KMM Group secured an investment from Boston-based RS2 Healthcare Partners as the Hatboro precision manufacturer looks to expand its capabilities serving medical-device companies and other markets requiring tight-tolerance components.
The transaction makes KMM the first new platform investment for RS2 since the private equity firm rebranded earlier this year and shifted its lower-middle-market investment strategy exclusively toward healthcare.
KMM operates as a vertically integrated contract manufacturer specializing in complex precision components. The company was founded by John Shegda and Eric Wilhelm.
The investment coincides with a leadership change at KMM. J. Mark King has been appointed president and chief executive officer, bringing more than 30 years of medical-device industry experience.
King previously served as president and CEO of Tegra Medical, a medical-device contract manufacturer that was a portfolio company of RS2 Healthcare Partners. He also previously served as an adviser to KMM.
“With this investment, I look forward to partnering with RS2, John, Eric, and the rest of the KMM team to expand the company’s capabilities and further strengthen its position as a premier contract manufacturer for medtech and other end markets,” King said.
KMM’s founders will remain in senior operating roles. Shegda will serve as chief technology officer, overseeing engineering and technology strategy, while Wilhelm has been named executive vice president of business transformation and organizational capability, with responsibility for operational improvements and scalable growth.
Shegda indicated the company considered multiple alternatives before selecting RS2 as its investment partner as customers place increasing demands on manufacturing and engineering capabilities.
“Manufacturing is evolving rapidly, and our customers continue to push the boundaries of engineering,” Shegda said.
RS2 identified KMM’s specialized manufacturing capabilities, customer base and position in medical-device contract manufacturing as factors behind the investment. The firm has prior experience investing in the sector through Tegra Medical.
Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP served as legal counsel to RS2 Healthcare Partners.
