PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia history is becoming a neighborhood-wide mystery this fall as Historic Germantown invites families, history buffs and curious explorers to follow clues, collect stamps and uncover the identities of people who helped shape Germantown, the city and the nation.
The free Historic Germantown 250th Stamp Rally launches Saturday, Sept. 12, at noon and continues through Nov. 14, sending participants to 23 historic and cultural sites across Northwest Philadelphia. The experience is part of Historic Germantown’s year-long celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
Rather than simply presenting a list of famous names, organizers are adding a twist: participants will not know which trailblazers are featured until they visit the sites and uncover them for themselves.
Free Stamp Rally booklets will be available at each participating location. Every stop will have a designated “Stamp House” containing a unique stamp, along with a QR code revealing the site’s featured figure. The people represented span artists, abolitionists, educators, activists and innovators whose influence extended beyond Germantown.
“Germantown’s history has always been shaped by people who challenged expectations, broke barriers, and created change,” Historic Germantown Executive Director Tuomi Forrest said. “With this Stamp Rally, we want people to have fun discovering those stories for themselves while exploring the places where so much of that history unfolded.”
The format encourages visitors to make multiple outings of the experience, gradually building their stamp collections while discovering historic destinations throughout the neighborhood.
There are rewards for exploring, too.
Participants who collect at least six stamps and/or scavenger-hunt answers can receive a set of Trailblazer Trading Cards featuring 18 influential figures connected to Historic Germantown. Those reaching 14 or more stops will also receive a Germantown ball cap.
Children who reach 20 or more stops will qualify for a grand-prize raffle for an Explorer Backpack filled with Historic Germantown merchandise, books, toys and T-shirts. Adults reaching the same milestone will receive a Historic Germantown membership and be entered to win “A Weekend in Historic Germantown,” featuring gift certificates and vouchers for local businesses, restaurants and events.
The season-long adventure culminates Saturday, Nov. 14, with a Stamp Rally Wrap Party from noon to 4 p.m. at the Historic Germantown Visitor Center. The celebration will include refreshments, prizes and grand-prize raffle drawings.
