Hamilton Lane Adds Finance Veteran as Board Oversight Expands

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Hamilton Lane Inc. (Nasdaq: HLNE) appointed longtime investment executive Michael Schmertzler as an independent director effective July 22, expanding board oversight as the private-markets manager scales its global platform.

Schmertzler becomes the fifth independent director on Hamilton Lane’s board, which also includes three executive directors.

The appointment adds experience in investment management, corporate finance, governance and technology across public and private organizations.

Executive Co-Chairman Hartley Rogers cited Schmertzler’s background as relevant to a more complex global investment environment.

“His deep business, governance, technology and financial services experience across both private and public sectors will bring a valuable perspective to our Board and firm,” Rogers stated.

Schmertzler has taught at Yale University since 1998 as a lecturer and adjunct professor in the economics department and School of Management. He also served as a visiting professor at Yale-NUS College Singapore.

He currently chairs PTC Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: PTCT), biotechnology companies Berryville Holdings and SHY Therapeutics, and technology provider Dispel LLC. He also serves as a director of AgNovos and as a charter trustee of Phillips Academy Andover.

Schmertzler previously served as a post-bankruptcy independent director of Lehman Commercial Paper Inc. from 2012 through 2020.

Earlier in his career, he was a managing director at Credit Suisse First Boston Equity Partners and served as chair of its investment committee. He previously held senior roles at Morgan Stanley, including president of Morgan Stanley Leveraged Capital Funds.

Schmertzler holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale College and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School.
