PHILADELPHIA, PA — Decades of experimental rock, jazz and downtown New York music history will converge on one Philadelphia stage when Gary Lucas & Gods and Monsters bring their recently revived power-trio lineup to City Winery.
The band will perform a rare show Sept. 22 featuring guitarist Gary Lucas, bassist Ernie Brooks and drummer G Calvin Weston, three musicians whose careers stretch across some of rock and experimental music’s more adventurous corners.
Lucas has performed with Captain Beefheart and collaborated with Jeff Buckley, while Brooks was a member of the Modern Lovers and worked with Arthur Russell. Weston’s credits include Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time, James Blood Ulmer and John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards.
Together, the trio draws from psychedelic rock, blues, jazz and improvisation, allowing songs to move into extended, less predictable territory onstage.
Music journalist David Fricke described the latest incarnation as “a power trio reborn,” pointing to the musicians’ combined histories with Captain Beefheart, Buckley, the Modern Lovers and Ulmer.
“Three decades after those first gigs at CBGB and the old Knitting Factory, Gods and Monsters still sound like the living late-show spirit of the Fillmore East,” Fricke wrote.
A Band Rebuilt Around Three Musicians
The current lineup emerged after Lucas decided in fall 2024 to revive Gods and Monsters following a hiatus of several years.
Brooks brought continuity to the new configuration, having performed with Lucas and Gods and Monsters for more than 25 years. Weston joined on drums, creating a stripped-down trio built around Lucas’ guitar, Brooks’ bass and Weston’s percussion.
The result is a lineup that can move between structured songs and open-ended improvisation, combining elements of art rock, psychedelic music, folk, blues and free jazz.
The Philadelphia appearance follows an international stretch for the group, which toured Japan earlier in 2026.

For Philadelphia listeners drawn to musicians who treat a live performance as something more fluid than a recreation of a recording, the City Winery appearance offers a chance to hear three veteran players bringing their different musical histories together in real time.
And with improvisation at the center of the trio’s approach, the music heard in Philadelphia may belong as much to that particular night as to the decades of work that brought Lucas, Brooks and Weston to the stage.
