Environmental Tectonics Profit Falls 20% Despite Sales Growth

Environmental Tectonics Corporation (ETC)

SOUTHAMPTON, PA — Environmental Tectonics Corporation (OTCID: ETCC) reported a 20% decline in quarterly profit from continuing operations despite an 8.6% increase in revenue, as weaker margins and higher project costs offset growing demand for its environmental testing and disaster simulation systems.

The company generated $1.2 million in net income from continuing operations, or 6 cents per diluted share, for its fiscal 2027 second quarter ended August 28, 2026, compared with $1.5 million, or 8 cents per diluted share, a year earlier.

Quarterly revenue increased to $18.3 million from $16.9 million, driven by substantial gains in environmental testing equipment and advanced disaster management simulators.

Operating income declined 17.7% to $2.1 million from $2.6 million, reflecting pressure on profitability despite higher sales.

Gross profit fell 9.3% to $4.4 million, while gross margin contracted to 24.1% from 28.8%.

Environmental Tectonics attributed the margin decline primarily to two unfavorable project cost revisions in its Aerospace segment, lower profitability on completed contracts and a prior-year benefit from the sale and leaseback of an aeromedical training device.

Sales of Environmental Test and Simulation Systems increased $2 million, or 468.2%, while Advanced Disaster Management Simulator revenue rose $700,000, or 161.1%.

Those gains were partially offset by a $600,000 decline in Sterilizer Systems revenue and an $800,000 decrease in Aerospace Training Systems sales.

Excluding aeromedical building sales, quarterly revenue increased 18.6%, or $2.6 million, compared with the prior-year period.

Robert L. Laurent Jr., the company’s president and chief executive officer, attributed the underlying sales growth to increased demand for environmental testing and disaster management simulation equipment.

The earnings report also follows a significant restructuring of the company’s international operations.

After the quarter ended, Environmental Tectonics completed the sale of its wholly owned Polish subsidiary, ETC-PZL Aerospace Industries.

Under a separate 10-year cooperation agreement, the former subsidiary will remain a preferred supplier for certain manufactured products, although Environmental Tectonics retains the option to produce those items internally.

The Polish business is classified as discontinued operations in the company’s fiscal 2027 and comparative fiscal 2026 financial statements.

Discontinued operations generated a quarterly loss of $400,000, compared with approximately break-even results a year earlier, reflecting limited third-party sales.

For the first six months of fiscal 2027, net income from continuing operations declined 25% to $1.8 million, or 9 cents per diluted share, from $2.4 million, or 13 cents per diluted share.

First-half revenue increased 1.9% to $34.5 million from $33.9 million. Excluding aeromedical building sales, revenue grew 13.1%, or $3.5 million.

Environmental testing revenue increased $5.2 million, or 842.1%, during the six-month period, while disaster management simulator sales rose $800,000, or 64%.

Sterilizer Systems revenue declined $3.3 million, or 35.1%, and Aerospace Training Systems sales fell $2.1 million, or 9.5%.

First-half gross profit decreased to $8.3 million from $8.9 million, with gross margin narrowing to 24% from 26.4%.

Excluding the impact of aeromedical center building revenue, gross margin declined to 27.3% from 33.7%, reflecting unfavorable aerospace project cost adjustments and lower margins on completed contracts.

Operating expenses increased 6.1% to $4.8 million, primarily because of higher general and administrative costs.

First-half operating income fell 21% to $3.5 million from $4.4 million.

The company also recorded an $800,000 loss from discontinued operations during the first half, compared with income of $400,000 in the prior-year period.

Despite weaker earnings, operating cash flow improved substantially.

Environmental Tectonics generated $3.7 million in cash from operating activities during the first six months, compared with $1.9 million a year earlier.

The increase reflected earnings from continuing operations and higher contract liabilities and accrued expenses, partially offset by increases in accounts receivable and contract assets.

The company used $3 million in financing activities, primarily to repay borrowings under its credit facility, compared with $1.9 million used in the prior-year period.

Capital expenditures remained limited, with investing activities using approximately $100,000 during each six-month period.

The results show a business generating stronger underlying sales and operating cash flow while facing reduced profitability from contract execution costs and a changing mix of revenue.
