Comcast, Fastly Push Streaming Traffic Deeper Into Network

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Fastly are moving content delivery deeper into Comcast’s nationwide network, an infrastructure shift designed to reduce streaming latency and expand capacity as live sports, gaming and artificial intelligence applications put heavier demands on broadband networks.

The companies are integrating Fastly’s programmable edge software into Comcast’s edge computing platform, allowing content to be stored and delivered from locations closer to Xfinity customers rather than traveling from more distant data centers.

The deployment spans more than 200 Comcast edge compute centers distributed across the country. The architecture is intended to handle large surges in live-streaming traffic while also providing computing capacity for real-time security, gaming and AI applications, including AI inference.

“The stakes will never be higher than during this upcoming fall football season, when a single streaming game can drive record network traffic,” Comcast Chief Network Officer Elad Nafshi said.

Nafshi said growing traffic volumes require closer coordination among content providers, edge platforms and network operators. Embedding Fastly’s software into Comcast’s infrastructure allows computing and traffic-management functions to operate deeper within the broadband network.

Comcast said initial results showed substantial improvements in data delivery and significant reductions in round-trip latency compared with traditional content-delivery methods. The company did not provide numerical performance results in its release.

The architecture can actively manage traffic volume and network capacity during major live events, when millions of simultaneous streaming requests can place pressure on centralized infrastructure. Comcast said the system is designed to support high-bandwidth streams, including 4K video, while reducing dependence on a smaller number of centralized locations and network paths.

Fastly’s software runs on Comcast’s virtual cable modem termination systems, or vCMTS, extending the broadband network into a programmable service layer capable of optimizing, protecting and processing traffic in real time.

That infrastructure gives the partnership a role beyond video delivery. Moving computing closer to users can reduce response times for online gaming, security applications and AI workloads that require rapid processing.

The companies are positioning the architecture to accommodate increasing traffic from AI agents, applications, APIs and connected devices as those workloads place additional performance and computing demands on broadband networks.

“Extending Fastly’s platform into Comcast’s network brings more local performance and real-time traffic management to streaming, compute, and security applications,” Fastly Chief Executive Officer Kip Compton said.

The partnership represents a shift from relying primarily on conventional content-delivery infrastructure toward placing software, content and computing resources inside the access network itself, giving Comcast greater ability to manage capacity and latency closer to its Xfinity customers.
