Burns Engineering Expands Midwest Reach With PRVN Acquisition

Business News

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Burns Engineering Inc. has acquired PRVN Consultants Inc., expanding its engineering capabilities and Midwest presence in the district energy, power generation and utility infrastructure markets as the company builds its Power & Utilities business.

The acquisition adds specialized mechanical, electrical, controls and structural engineering expertise to Burns’ existing operations, strengthening its ability to serve institutional, industrial and utility clients on complex energy infrastructure projects.

Founded in 2011, PRVN provides engineering services for central energy plants, utility distribution networks, industrial processing facilities and related infrastructure.

Its technical capabilities include combined heat and power systems, electricity generation, central heating and chilled water plants, thermal energy storage, geothermal systems and renewable fuels.

The firm also specializes in process water treatment, industrial controls and automation, broadening the range of engineering services Burns can provide across energy generation and distribution projects.

The transaction expands Burns’ geographic reach in the Midwest while combining PRVN’s specialized energy engineering operations with Burns’ broader infrastructure services and national platform.

For Burns, the acquisition strengthens its position in markets where clients require coordinated engineering across power generation, thermal energy systems and utility infrastructure.

“This acquisition is a strategic milestone for Burns and our Power & Utilities practice,” said Matthew Burns, president and chief executive officer of Burns Engineering.

“The joining of Burns and PRVN strengthens our mechanical, electrical, controls and structural capabilities, expands our Midwest presence, and positions us to deliver more integrated solutions that improve efficiency, reliability, and resilience for our clients,” Burns said.

District energy systems, which provide heating or cooling to multiple buildings from centralized facilities, are among the specialized infrastructure markets served by PRVN.

The firm’s combined heat and power expertise also adds capabilities involving systems that produce electricity and recover usable thermal energy from the same generation process.

Those services complement Burns’ existing Power & Utilities practice, particularly for clients managing central energy facilities, industrial operations and interconnected utility systems.

PRVN President Jim Nonnenmann said the combination would give the firm’s employees and clients access to Burns’ broader engineering resources.

“Burns’ national platform and complementary infrastructure expertise create new opportunities for our team members and broaden support available to our clients,” Nonnenmann said.

The acquisition represents another step in Burns’ strategy of expanding its Power & Utilities practice through complementary engineering businesses, adding technical expertise and regional capacity to support energy infrastructure projects across the Midwest and nationally.
