GORDONVILLE, PA — Belmont Solar, a Lancaster County solar installation company, is marking 25 years in business in November 2026 as advances in equipment and system integration reshape how residential and commercial solar power systems are installed across Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region.
Founded in 2001 by electrician Ben Zook, the company has expanded from building customized off-grid power systems to installing solar technology that can integrate battery storage, electric vehicle charging and heat pumps.
The transition reflects changes in solar equipment manufacturing that have reduced the need for customized components and simplified installation, according to Zook, the company’s owner and a certified master electrician through the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.
“The biggest changes we’ve seen in the industry are that the installations are quicker, there are fewer custom jobs, and we can build a system with less clutter in the mechanical room or power conversion area,” Zook stated.
When Zook entered the solar industry, installations frequently required individual engineering solutions, with equipment and configurations varying substantially between projects.
The development of standardized components has since allowed installers to assemble more integrated systems, reducing the complexity of equipment installation while expanding the range of technologies that can operate together.
Belmont Solar’s business has also expanded beyond installation services. The company acquired Tough Trac, a designer and manufacturer of solar panel mounting systems, and established partnerships with Solar for America, Sol-Ark and Tesla.
Those relationships broadened its involvement in solar equipment and related technologies as the industry developed beyond conventional photovoltaic installations.
Zook described the company’s early operations as a period of experimentation, when he and employees learned to work with emerging equipment and installation methods.
The business originated with an off-grid power supply that combined solar panels and batteries, an approach that preceded the more integrated energy systems available today.
Belmont Solar has continued operating through periods of industry expansion and uncertainty, with Zook emphasizing customer education and the long-term performance of solar investments.
The company recently participated in the 2026 American Solar Energy Society National Solar Tour, which gives members of the public opportunities to examine operating solar installations.
On Oct. 3, Zook opened his net-zero home in Lancaster County to visitors interested in seeing how solar generation and related technologies function in a residential setting.
The event attracted a few dozen participants in person and online, the largest turnout Zook reported for his participation in the tour.
“It means a lot when people see what solar can do, but there are still so many people who have no idea yet,” Zook stated.
The company has also published a retrospective examining changes in solar technology since 2001, including developments in installation practices and equipment integration.
The retrospective, titled “Solar Evolution: How Solar Technology Has Changed Since 2001,” is available at https://www.belmontsolar.com/blog/25-years-of-solar-technology-advancements.
Belmont Solar is based at 3376 Harvest Drive in Gordonville and serves customers across the Mid-Atlantic region. Additional company information is available at https://www.belmontsolar.com.
