RADNOR, PA — Arkema has launched a low-viscosity additive for rigid polyurethane foam formulations, expanding its portfolio for manufacturers shifting to lower-global-warming-potential blowing agents used in insulation, roofing, appliances, and thermal management.
The Foranext Continuum additive is designed for formulations containing Arkema’s Forane FBA 1233zd blowing agent. The company developed the product to improve the shelf stability of the B-side component of polyurethane foam systems and maintain formulation consistency over time.
The launch extends Arkema’s investment in hydrofluoroolefin, or HFO, technology as manufacturers develop polyurethane foam systems for energy-efficient buildings, appliances and other applications.
“As customers continue to advance their transition to HFO-based technologies, they are looking for solutions that deliver value beyond the blowing agent itself,” Frédéric Gauvard, Arkema’s group president of fluorogases, stated.
Arkema recently started a 15-kiloton production unit for Forane 1233zd in Calvert City, Kentucky, adding manufacturing capacity for the blowing agent used with the new additive.
The company is positioning Foranext Continuum and Forane FBA 1233zd as complementary products for manufacturers seeking to maintain foam performance while moving toward lower-GWP formulations.
Foranext Continuum is available globally through Arkema’s fluorochemicals business.
