NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA — AmeriHealth Caritas made a strategic investment in Deon Health, backing the Michigan-based managed care company’s specialized model for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as Medicaid-focused insurers look for more coordinated ways to serve complex populations.
Terms of the investment were not disclosed. Deon Health will remain independent, and the transaction will not change its existing provider partnerships, care decisions or employment relationships involving direct support professionals.
Deon Health works with local home- and community-based service providers to coordinate clinical, behavioral and support services around individual patients.
Its Community Supported Care Model is designed to integrate those services while keeping direct support professionals central to day-to-day care.
AmeriHealth Caritas brings Medicaid experience to the partnership, while Deon Health contributes a model focused specifically on intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“Through our work serving people with I/DD, we know that their care needs are deeply personal and require an approach built around the individual,” Independence Health Group Chief Executive Officer Kelly Munson said.
Munson cited Deon Health’s locally focused structure as a reason for the investment.
Deon Health Chief Executive Officer Sara Ratner said the capital will support expansion while preserving the company’s existing operating model.
“This investment will help us strengthen that work while preserving what makes our approach distinctive,” Ratner said.
The financing also included participation from Town Hall Ventures, First Trust Partners Capital Partners LLC, Difference Partners and other investors.
Deon Health founder and President Shane Spotts said the company sought an investor that could add Medicaid expertise without displacing its relationships with families, providers and direct support professionals.
The companies did not disclose the size of AmeriHealth Caritas’ stake or other financial terms.
