HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania will invest nearly $10 million in airport construction and infrastructure projects across eight facilities as the state seeks to expand aviation capacity, preserve aging infrastructure, and support regional economic activity.
The funding, administered through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Aviation Transportation Assistance Program, will support hangar construction, taxiway expansion, electrical upgrades, vehicle acquisitions, and maintenance improvements at airports in Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Erie, Luzerne, Lycoming, and Montgomery counties.
Pennsylvania’s aviation sector supports more than 226,000 jobs and contributes about $34 billion annually to the state economy, according to PennDOT. Regional airports also support cargo transport, emergency medical services, firefighting operations, law enforcement activity, and disaster response.
PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll noted that the projects are intended to maintain infrastructure while supporting business growth tied to aviation activity.
“Pennsylvania’s airports connect communities and move goods and people around the world,” remarked Carroll. “These investments are another example of Governor Josh Shapiro’s focus on maintaining our infrastructure while also expanding business opportunities.”
The largest allocation will go to the Wilkes-Barre Wyoming Valley Airport, which will receive approximately $2.97 million to expand taxiways and taxilanes tied to the construction of two 12-unit T-hangars.
Heritage Field Airport in Montgomery County will receive about $2.88 million to construct a corporate hangar, while Pittsburgh International Airport will receive roughly $1.54 million for construction of a field maintenance fuel system.
In Chester County, New Garden Airport will receive $954,000 to build a 10-unit T-hangar.
Other funded projects include hangar rehabilitation work at Doylestown Airport and Williamsport Regional Airport, electrical upgrades at Quakertown Airport, and the purchase of three airport safety vehicles for Erie International Airport.
The projects will be financed through Pennsylvania’s capital budget using bond-supported aviation funding, PennDOT said.
