WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Transportation Department awarded $615 million across 238 airport infrastructure grants, funding runway improvements, terminal construction and safety upgrades in 42 states and two territories.
The investments, distributed through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, target projects intended to expand airport capacity, improve airfield operations and modernize passenger facilities.
Midland International Air & Space Port in Texas will receive $21.5 million for runway rehabilitation, the largest individual project identified by the department.
Another $19.5 million will support construction of a new airport in Noatak, Alaska.
San Diego International Airport will receive $15.3 million for noise mitigation, while Gary/Chicago International Airport in Indiana will receive $8.3 million for a new contract air traffic control tower.
Lynchburg Regional Airport in Virginia was awarded $8 million for a new terminal.
Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina will receive $6.3 million to extend a runway, and Sacramento International Airport in California will receive $2.4 million for new passenger boarding bridges.
Federal Aviation Administrator Bryan Bedford indicated the projects are intended to improve safety and efficiency as demand for air travel increases.
“We’re prioritizing these grants in a time when Americans are traveling more than ever,” Bedford stated.
Airport Improvement Program funding can also support taxiways, airfield signage, lighting, runway markings and other safety-related infrastructure.
