PENNSYLVANIA — PA Solar Center and Solar United Neighbors launched a statewide campaign to recruit and train about 100 volunteers to promote renewable energy as a way to reduce electricity costs, with applications now open.

The initiative, Energy Independence for Pennsylvania, aims to prepare volunteers—called “Energy Leaders”—to educate communities on the cost and supply dynamics of energy and the role of solar, wind and efficiency in lowering bills.

Organizers plan to train participants over the next six months, including a six-hour in-person session scheduled for Monday, June 8, and Monday, June 15, in Westmoreland County.

Volunteers will be expected to commit about 20 hours over the campaign period, supporting outreach through community events, town hall presentations and online engagement.

Sharon Pillar, executive director of the PA Solar Center, said rising demand and limited supply have contributed to higher energy costs, adding that renewable energy can be deployed more quickly to expand supply.

Monica Carey, Pennsylvania state director of Solar United Neighbors, said the program is intended to address gaps in public understanding of how renewable energy affects overall electricity pricing.
