HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Auditor General’s Office has been named one of the Pennsylvania Chamber’s “Greatest Places to Intern” for a second consecutive year, recognition the agency says reflects its effort to recruit and retain young professionals for careers in state government.
Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor stated the department’s Intern to Hire program has converted 18 interns into full-time employees since its launch in 2022, providing a pipeline for graduates entering the public sector.
“Our Intern to Hire program provides real-life work experience and gives students a clear pathway to employment after they graduate,” DeFoor stated.
The current internship class includes students from Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania-Bloomsburg, Penn State’s Abington, Harrisburg and University Park campuses, and Elizabethtown College. Participants are studying business management, information technology, accounting, business administration and professional writing.
The department’s internship program is open to qualified undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent associate degree graduates, pursuing studies in accounting, business, data analytics, finance, economics, mathematics and related fields. Applicants generally must maintain at least a 2.5 grade-point average and demonstrate an interest in public service.
Austin Pastal, who joined the department through its inaugural Intern to Hire cohort and now mentors current intern Liya Sara Aji, said the transition to full-time employment was aided by the experience gained during the internship.
“Going from an intern to full-time employee was streamlined since I had already been working and training with the department,” Pastal stated.
The Intern to Hire initiative is intended to create a direct employment pathway for students and recent graduates from Pennsylvania colleges, universities and community colleges into the Auditor General’s Office.
