PITTSBURGH, PA — A new state-backed initiative aims to position Pittsburgh as a national destination for craft arts, with funding designed to boost tourism, support artists, and grow the regional economy.
What This Means for You
- New funding will promote Pittsburgh as a national craft destination
- Local artists will gain exposure at major national events
- Initiative aims to drive tourism and economic activity
Pennsylvania Creative Industries, supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, announced $87,000 in seed funding to launch “Pittsburgh IS Craft,” a multi-year effort focused on elevating the city’s craft sector.
The initiative is led by three Pittsburgh-based organizations — Pittsburgh Glass Center, Contemporary Craft, and Union Project — which specialize in materials such as glass, ceramics, fiber, wood, and metal.
How the Initiative Works
The program is designed to increase visibility for Pittsburgh artists and attract visitors by promoting opportunities to view, create, and purchase craft.
Key components include:
- A promotional campaign, including a national marketing video
- Showcasing more than 20 Pittsburgh artists at the 2026 Seattle Art Fair
- Participation in national craft conferences to expand reach and partnerships
Economic and Cultural Impact
State officials said the effort is intended to strengthen the creative economy while increasing tourism and supporting local businesses.
The creative sector contributes more than $30,000,000,000 to Pennsylvania’s economy and supports nearly 190,000 jobs.
“We cannot wait to see how this project helps elevate artists and Pittsburgh’s contributions to our Commonwealth’s creative sector,” said Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Chair Susan S. Cohen.
Lawmakers from both parties said the initiative could serve as a model for expanding economic development through the arts.
Local Collaboration
Organizers said the project builds on an existing partnership among the three lead organizations, which have collaborated on previous programs.
The initiative aims to increase awareness of Pittsburgh as a craft destination, expand economic opportunities for artists, and attract more visitors to the region.
Next Steps
The program will begin with national outreach and artist promotion efforts, with additional phases planned over multiple years to expand partnerships and economic impact.
