BELLEFONTE, PA — A 40-year-old inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Benner Township was pronounced dead Saturday after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to prison officials.

Keith Levan was discovered unresponsive on April 11, and staff administered life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived, Superintendent Bradley M. Booher said.

Levan was pronounced dead by EMS personnel following consultation with Mount Nittany Medical Center officials.

He had been serving a four- to 10-year sentence for failure to comply with sexual offender registration requirements stemming from a Columbia County conviction.

Levan was transferred to SCI Benner Township on February 3 from SCI Houtzdale.

The Pennsylvania State Police will investigate the death in accordance with state policy, officials said.
