HARRISBURG, PAPennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Thomas Cook announced that applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Act 13 Unconventional Gas Well Fund (UGWF) grant. This funding is crucial for volunteer and career fire departments, emergency medical services (EMS), and rescue companies operating in the Commonwealth’s regions where unconventional gas well drilling occurs.

The initiative aims to provide these emergency services with the financial support necessary to enhance their capabilities in responding to incidents related to natural gas well operations. “The Office of the State Fire Commissioner is committed to providing resources to our emergency services personnel to prepare for hazards facing our communities,” stated Commissioner Cook. “These grants help to cover the costs of vital training and equipment for unconventional gas well emergency response, ensuring our first responders and communities are safe in the event of an emergency.”

Eligible applicants include fire companies, rescue units, and EMS operating in the 40 counties with unconventional gas wells, as well as those in the 11 counties directly adjacent to these areas. The grants cover projects such as the development and provision of specialized training, acquisition of certification for personnel, and procurement of essential equipment tailored for gas well emergency responses.

Among the approved uses of the grant funds are obtaining professional national certification for fire, rescue, and EMS personnel. Additionally, funds may be used to purchase firefighting, rescue, EMS, or air monitoring equipment, which is critical for managing incidents at or near unconventional gas well pads. The Pennsylvania State Fire Academy is also offering specialized training classes and educational materials without additional cost to grant beneficiaries, further enhancing the preparedness of emergency teams.

This grant represents a targeted approach to ensuring that emergency services in the impacted counties have the tools and knowledge required to effectively manage emergencies associated with the unconventional gas industry. By enhancing the skills and equipment of first responders, the UGWF grant plays a pivotal role in safeguarding communities, preventing accidents, and ensuring a swift and efficient response to potential hazards.

Applications for the 2024 UGWF grant will be accepted until November 30, 2024, at 4 p.m. Potential applicants are encouraged to review their eligibility and submit their proposals promptly to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their operational readiness and community safety.
