ERIE, PA — Pennsylvania’s official flagship, the U.S. Brig Niagara, returned to its home port Friday after a $6.9 million restoration project, reopening one of the state’s most prominent historic attractions ahead of Independence Day celebrations and America’s 250th anniversary observances.
The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission welcomed the vessel back to the Erie Maritime Museum following the completion of an extensive refit funded through a Department of General Services capital project aimed at preserving the ship for long-term operation and public education.
The Niagara, a reconstruction of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s relief flagship from the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, serves as a sailing school vessel and maritime history attraction.
“The U.S. Brig Niagara is a testament to our shared history and a vital educational resource for all Pennsylvanians,” PHMC Chairwoman Hayley Haldeman said in a statement, adding that the investment ensures the vessel can continue telling the story of the Battle of Lake Erie “for generations to come.”
The restoration included major structural repairs, including reconstruction of the ship’s bow, replacement of roughly 30% of the hull planking and 1,500 linear feet of compromised bulwark planking, and a redesign of the vessel’s waterway system to prevent wood rot. The project also replaced the ship’s 1992 diesel engines with Caterpillar C7.1 engines that meet Tier 3 Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards and provide additional horsepower for safer operation in adverse weather conditions.
“Preserving a wooden sailing vessel is an immense, ongoing commitment, and this $6.9 million refit represents the Commonwealth’s dedication to our maritime heritage,” PHMC Executive Director Andrea Lowery said in a statement.
The ship’s return coincides with a three-day Independence Day weekend celebration at the Erie Maritime Museum from July 3 through July 5, sponsored by Erie Insurance. The event includes public deck tours, War of 1812 reenactments, historical demonstrations, food trucks and scheduled flyovers by Commemorative Air Force aircraft.
