WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Veterans Affairs has partnered with Steak ‘n Shake to expand employment and business ownership opportunities for veterans, including eliminating a franchise program fee for veterans seeking to operate company restaurants.

The agreement, outlined in a memorandum of understanding between the VA and the restaurant chain, combines recruiting efforts with initiatives designed to increase veterans’ awareness of federal healthcare and benefits.

Under the partnership, Steak ‘n Shake will waive the $10,000 fee required under its Franchise Partner Program for veterans pursuing ownership opportunities through the company’s franchise model.

The company also will promote VA healthcare and benefits through in-store signage and its website while giving hiring priority for leadership positions to veterans, VA beneficiaries, family members, caregivers and survivors, according to the agreement.

VA Secretary Doug Collins said the partnership is intended to help veterans transition into business ownership and employment after military service.

“This agreement with Steak ‘n Shake will make it easier for Veterans and their families to do just that,” Collins said.

Michael Boes, Steak ‘n Shake’s chief MAHA officer, said the partnership is intended to expand economic opportunities for veterans by supporting both leadership hiring and franchise ownership.

“Veterans are among the finest leaders in our country, and this partnership is about translating our respect for them into real economic opportunity — both behind the counter and at the ownership level,” Boes said.
