WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said it reached record levels this year for suicide prevention screenings and follow-up evaluations for veterans identified as being at risk of suicide.
According to the department, 88% of veterans who received VA care during the previous 12 months completed an annual suicide risk screening as of March 2026, the highest participation rate since the agency began tracking the data in 2021.
The VA also reported that 96% of veterans identified as at risk completed a comprehensive follow-up evaluation and support plan within 24 hours, another record high since data collection began. The department said veterans who did not receive evaluations within that timeframe either completed them later or declined the service.
The agency linked the improvements to recommendations outlined in a 2024 report from the VA Office of Inspector General, which found deficiencies in suicide risk screening and timely follow-up care during the Biden administration. The VA said the Office of Inspector General acknowledged implementation of the recommendations in April 2026.
Doug Collins said the department is increasing outreach efforts to veterans who are not enrolled in VA care.
“VA care and benefits are key to reducing Veteran suicide, and under President Trump, the department is redoubling its efforts to reach those most at risk,” Collins said.
The VA said more than 60% of veteran suicides involve individuals who were not receiving VA care during the two years prior to their deaths. The department added that outreach efforts helped bring more than 125,000 additional veterans into VA health care programs in 2026.
